Chamber Breakfast to Feature Merriam-Webster Editor at LargeApril 11, 2017
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., April 5, 2017 – The Springfield Regional Chamber will present its Business@Breakfast, featuring word nerd Peter Sokolowski, otherwise known as editor at large of the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, on May 3 from 7:15-9:00 a.m. at Chez Josef, 173 Shoemaker Lane, Agawam. The breakfast is sponsored by series sponsor, United Personnel Services and breakfast sponsor TD Bank.
Sokolowski is also the public face of Merriam-Webster; he appears in videos, records the company’s popular Word of the Day podcasts, and represents the dictionary at the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
The venerable 189-year-old Merriam Webster Dictionary is having a moment on Twitter, where its followers have increased to more than 300,000 in the past year. On Twitter, Merriam-Webster is not only educational, but current and a bit sassy. It has been called “The sassiest Twitter account in the Trump era.”
The writers behind @MerriamWebster tweet the Word of the Day, definitions of most-searched words, crowd-sourced definitions and more.
Sokolowski will talk about trending words, the 1,000 new words recently added to the dictionary – including Seussian, and how an old-fashioned company is making news by being humorous and sassy on social media.
Also at the breakfast, Pride Stores will be recognized for its 100th anniversary.
